Tequila it is a drink that represents México, it is often regarded as an ancestral drink has been produced since the 16th century. Not only does it have a long and prosperous history, Agave as a great plant is recognized throughout the world, especially in the American continent; one of the most famous drinks in the world, Tequila, is extracted from it. Agave is a slow-growing plant that takes approximately seven years to reach enough maturity to be harvested.

Tequila is a gift from México to the world and represents Mexican culture around the world. Mexican tequila is distilled to produced several different varieties depending on its maturation process, including:

  • 100% agave: Fully composed of Agave sugars.

  • White or Silver: Transparent and unlike the other varieties, these do not go through aging in wooden barrels.

  • Young: A result of the mixture of a white tequila with a reposado, añejo or extra añejo resulting in a golden colour.

  • Abocado: This name is given to tequilas that are sweetened or flavoured to be more palatable.

  • Reposado: A tequila that matures in oak barrels for a minimum of 2 months and a maximum of 12.

  • Añejo: A tequila that is aged for more than a year, usually 3 years and has a strong wooden flavour with soft notes.

  • Extra Añejo: Aged for over 8 years, this tequila goes through a longer distillation process to ensure a higher alcohol level.

Drinking tequila in shot glasses has become a trend, however, it does not allow for an accurate enjoyment, true perception of the essences that make up the drink. If a tequila glass is unavailable, opt for a cognac glass, its narrow rim will allow you to better perceive the components of your tequila. Another secret to know if the drink is worth trying or not, is to bring your glass close to your nose and smell it closely with your mouth slightly open to allow for an accurate capture of its essence. This method will allow you to verify that your tequila contains the aromas that you perceived.

Tequila, like wine, needs to be savoured and ingested slowly to ensure a good taste and to appreciate the flavours and aromas that make it up. Drinking tequila properly also has benefits, not only will you enjoy it more, it will also lessen the harsh effect it has on your throat when its ingested quickly.

So take your time, sit back, and savour your favourite tequila a sip at a time!
